Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honey bees to build the comb structures inside their colonies.
Those familiar hexagonal honeycomb cells aren’t simply places where honey happens to collect. They’re constructed by bees and used throughout the colony for storing honey and pollen and raising developing bees.
The material that makes those structures possible is beeswax.
Humans have found uses for that wax for centuries, turning it into candles, polishes, wood conditioners, cosmetics, art materials, waterproofing compounds, and many other products.
How Do Bees Make Beeswax?
Worker honey bees produce wax through specialized wax-producing glands.
The wax initially appears in small scales. Bees manipulate these scales and incorporate them into the comb.
Producing comb requires substantial energy and resources from a colony, which is one reason genuine beeswax is more valuable than many manufactured wax alternatives.
The result is one of nature’s most recognizable structures: honeycomb.
Is Beeswax the Same as Honey?
No.
Honey and beeswax both come from the hive, but they’re completely different substances.
Honey is food produced by bees from floral nectar and other plant sources.
Beeswax is the structural material bees produce to build comb.
The association between the two is one reason beeswax can have a subtle honey-like aroma, but melting beeswax doesn’t simply produce solidified honey.
Why Is Beeswax Yellow?
Fresh wax can initially be very light.
As bees use the comb and the wax comes into contact with pollen, propolis, honey, and other materials within the hive, its color can change.
Natural beeswax may appear:
- nearly white
- cream
- pale yellow
- golden yellow
- amber
- brown
Color alone doesn’t necessarily indicate quality.
Processing and filtration also affect the final appearance.
What Is White Beeswax?
White beeswax is generally beeswax that has been filtered and/or further processed to remove or reduce natural coloration.
It’s useful for applications where the strong yellow color of natural beeswax isn’t desirable.
For many traditional beeswax products, however, the natural golden appearance is part of the appeal.
What Does Beeswax Feel Like?
At normal room temperature, beeswax is firm but not rock hard.
It softens as it warms and melts when heated sufficiently.
This temperature-sensitive behavior makes it useful for candles, polishes, conditioners, and molded products.
When blended with oils, beeswax can also be transformed into softer pastes and conditioners.
That’s how a hard block of wax can become a spreadable wood-care product.
What Is Beeswax Made Of?
Beeswax isn’t a single chemical compound.
It’s a complex mixture primarily consisting of esters, hydrocarbons, fatty acids, and other naturally occurring compounds.
That composition gives beeswax its characteristic firmness, melting behavior, aroma, and water-resistant properties.
What Temperature Does Beeswax Melt At?
Beeswax generally melts in the range of roughly 144–147°F (62–64°C), although natural variation can occur.
This relatively high melting range contributes to the firm structure of beeswax candles and makes beeswax useful in products that need to remain solid at normal room temperatures.
Whenever beeswax is melted, it should be heated carefully. Like other waxes, overheated wax presents a fire hazard.
Why Is Beeswax Expensive?
Beeswax is generally more expensive than paraffin and many other waxes because of how it’s produced.
A factory can manufacture or refine enormous quantities of some alternative waxes.
Beeswax ultimately depends on honey bees.
Colonies need resources and time to produce comb, and beekeepers must manage hives, harvest appropriate wax, clean it, filter it, and prepare it for use.
That makes beeswax fundamentally different from a commodity wax manufactured at industrial scale.
Does Beeswax Go Bad?
Pure beeswax is highly stable.
When stored somewhere clean, dry, and protected from excessive heat, it can remain usable for a very long time.
You may occasionally see a pale or whitish coating develop on natural beeswax. This phenomenon is often called beeswax bloom.
Bloom doesn’t necessarily indicate spoilage and can sometimes be removed or reduced by gently warming or polishing the surface.
What Can You Do With Beeswax?
Beeswax has an unusually broad range of applications.
It can be used for:
- candles
- woodworking
- cutting-board conditioner
- furniture polish
- leather care
- lip balms
- salves
- cosmetics
- crafts
- waxed thread
- art
- reusable wraps
Its usefulness comes from the same combination of characteristics bees rely on: beeswax is firm, moldable when warm, relatively water resistant, and stable.
Why Is Beeswax Used on Wood?
Beeswax can help condition and protect certain wood surfaces.
For cutting boards, it is commonly combined with food-safe mineral oil.
Mineral oil penetrates into the wood fibers.
Beeswax remains closer to the surface and helps create an additional barrier.
The combination doesn’t make wood waterproof, but it can help reduce rapid moisture exchange and keep the surface feeling conditioned.
Why Is Beeswax Used for Candles?
Beeswax naturally lends itself to candlemaking because it is solid at room temperature, melts when heated, and can hold its shape when cooled.
It can be molded or poured into different candle forms and paired with an appropriately sized wick.
Natural beeswax also has a distinctive appearance and subtle aroma that many people prefer without adding artificial fragrance.
A Material Made by Bees, Used by People
One of the most interesting things about beeswax is how little the fundamental material has changed.
Bees produce it for one purpose: building their hive.
Humans discovered that the same properties that make wax useful to bees make it useful for an extraordinary number of other applications.
